Evenings bring stunning sunsets, potluck dinners, and stargazing under crystal clear skies. With time, you’ll find rhythms get slower, smiles get warmer, and nature gets more abundant. A longer stay Kaipara isn’t just a visit - it’s an invitation to reconnect with land, people, and yourself.
5 day trip
This relaxed five-day journey blends coastal walks, hidden bush trails, rich history, and warm harbour towns. With time to linger, chat with locals, and soak up the scenery, you’ll uncover the quieter magic of Kaipara - coffee in hand, sand between your toes, and stories all around.
-
Begin with east coast beauty
Ease into your Kaipara stay with a cliff-top walk above the waves at Mangawhai, followed by a coffee and brunch. Visit the Mangawhai Museum to learn about the area's maritime past before finding a spot for dinner. It’s a gentle start with time to breathe in the sea air and settle into the slower pace.
-
Trails, play and time by the water
Start your morning with a bush walk on the Tanekaha Track or let the kids run free at the Mangawhai Activity Zone. Grab a bite from a local café, then head to the boat ramp with takeaways to watch the tides roll in or head in for a swim. It’s a day for light adventures and local discoveries, with plenty of time to take it slow.
-
A peaceful harbour day
Head inland through Kaiwaka - perfect for a coffee and bite to eat - then spend the afternoon exploring the Kauri Museum for a glimpse into Kaipara history. From there, make your way to a harbour village like Pahi, Tinopai or Whakapirau and settle in for the night. Think sunset swims, fish and chips by the water, and that “never left” feeling.
-
West coast horizons and open skies
Venture west via Dargaville, where you can grab lunch and supplies before heading down the long road to Pouto Point Lighthouse. Take in the windswept views where the harbour meets the Tasman Sea, then make your way north to end the day with a beach stroll and sunset at either Baylys Beach or Glinks Gully. Back in Dargaville, you’ll find lots of dinner options.
-
Lakes, bush and birdsong
Start with a morning swim or paddle at the sparkling Kai Iwi Lakes. Cap off your trip with a forest walk at Trounson Kauri Park - home to ancient trees and, if you're lucky, glimpses of native wildlife. This is a grounding end to a slow, beautiful journey through the heart of Kaipara.
